Facilitate activities for the advancement of Food Science and Nutrition and Nutrition, anchoring and expanding its applications at all levels by facilitating networking in Africa through exchange of information, experiences and facilitate human and physical resource capacity development and sharing these resources where they exist in African countries.

SCOPE OF THE WORK

1. Promote collaborative research in Food Science and Nutrition among African countries

FOSNNA serves as information resource center to its members regarding current Food Science and Nutrition research agendas and activities in different parts of the world. It also provides linkages with experts in the field of Food Science and Nutrition, encourage and give possible support to member food scientists. Addresses for institutions of higher learning institutions, research institutes with their specialties and funding agencies for Food Science and Nutrition researchers is made available to members.

2. Internet linking members

A web site is developed that establishes linkages between member countries. This enables a member country to receive and post any Food Science and Nutrition information, questions, answers or comments via the Internet. Further, FOSNNA invites known food scientists and experts of different disciplines in Food Science and Nutrition to participate in the discussion forum through its web site.

3. Organize Food Science and Nutrition conferences and workshops

FOSNNA organizes conferences, workshops, seminars or symposia biennially during which time researchers get to know each other, share experiences and discuss issues of mutual interest.

4. Provide information and facilitate exchange of researchers, students and technicians

FOSNNA will facilitate Scientist and student exchange for collaborative research and/or further training in Food Science and Nutrition. FOSNNA will also facilitate scientists to attend scientific meetings and from time to time circulates information regarding opportunities to affiliating bodies.

5. Encourage public-private partnerships in product development and problems solving

African countries, despite the world's fast science advancements, most food industries are set up to produce limited varieties of products with little diversification. Consequently, products produced in these countries do not meet consumer demands. Lack of R&D in these industries limits diversification of products.

FOSNNA encourages collaboration between Food Science and Nutrition researchers and food industries to strengthen R&D for product development and diversification under the sponsorship of the food industries.

6. Encourage open laboratory system among member country of the Network

FOSNNA develops a data bank of Food Scientists and laboratory research facilities in the region and update it periodically. This is posted in the FOSNNA's web-site where members access and know research facilities and expertise available in Africa region.

The web-site also facilitates arrangement for collaborative research work, visits and training programs between scientists within member countries and/or with scientists from non-member countries. Member countries are encouraged to develop Harmonized Inter laboratory Proficiency Testing Systems.

7. Provide Food Science and Nutrition information through mass media and producing printed information

Periodically, FOSNNA produces different types of print media documents, publication including brochures and newsletters.

These are things where FOSNNA aims, but all is not being done yet. Examples:-

"FOSNNA enables a member country to receive and post any Food Science and Nutrition information, questions, answers or comments via the Internet." not done but intention

"FOSNNA develops a data of Food Scientists and Laboratory research facilities in the region and Update it Periodically. This is posted in the FOSNN's web-site."not done but intention

"FOSNNA produces different types of print media documents, publication incliding brochures and newsletters."not done but intention

STATUS
FOSNNA shall be a non-political, non-sectarian and non-profit making scientific body for professionals in Food Science and Nutrition, related fields and individuals working or interested in these disciplines.
